Given the recent slide that the Pittsburgh Penguins were on, their trip over to Sweden as part of the NHL’s Global Series felt equally as important as it did special.
The Penguins had lost four of their last five and five of their last seven. That losing stretch had included a rough 5-2 loss in Winnipeg, a blown 3-0 lead and loss in Toronto, and a 3-2 loss to Los Angeles at home before making the trip overseas.
Though two of those losses did come in extra time, the Penguins had amassed just six of a possible 14 points. Their head start across much of the NHL had evaporated.
Facing off against the struggling Nashville Predators twice in three days, the Penguins really needed to get all four possible points during this trip.
