I don’t know about you, but waking up at 9:30am on a Sunday for football feels just a little bit too early for me.
But, when the Pittsburgh Steelers win, it certainly makes the early weekend morning more bearable. In the first ever NFL game in France, the Steelers took down the New Orleans Saints 16-10 and are now 5-2 on the year.
So, while the Steelers re-adjust to the Eastern Time Zone, here’s the stock report all the way from Paris.
Stock Up: Rico Dowdle
At this point, Jaylen Warren is the free space for the “stock up” category. The front-runner for team MVP through seven weeks had 101 yards on 18 carries and averaged 5.6 yards a run.
However, his running mate in Dowdle had a decent day as well. In his second week coming back after an injury, Dowdle picked up 41 carries on nine carries and provided a change of pace at times when the Steelers needed it. He also tacked on 45 receiving yards and six catches.
Now, this is in no way to suggest Dowdle needs to cut into Warren’s carries. Warren is the powerhouse of this offense right now, and until that changes, he should get a starting running back’s workload. But, it was nice to see Dowdle get involved in the game and make positive impacts as well.
Stock Down: Discipline
While the Steelers finished with a respectable five penalties for 42 yards, a decent chunk of that yardage could have been avoided with a more disciplined Steelers team.
Two personal fouls really stick out to me here. Brandon Smith took a needless unnecessary roughness penalty on Pittsburgh’s second drive that put his team inside their own 10-yard line, and contributed to the drive eventually stalling. Then late in the second quarter, Mason McCormick belly flops onto a pile of players in a play already blown dead, drawing a 15-yard flag that pushed kicker Chris Boswell back.
In a six-point game (I know in theory it would have been nine) like this, careless penalties like that can make or break a game.
Stock Up: Patrick Queen
I know people are going to get on him for dropping that near-interception, but I thought Queen had a great game in general Sunday morning.
Queen led the club with 10 total tackles, and his day was likely highlighted by blowing up Saints quarterback Tyler Shough late in the fourth quarter.
I have not always been a huge fan of Queen’s play since signing in Pittsburgh, but give him credit for a great game against New Orleans.
Stock Down: Wide Receiver Depth
Much of Pittsburgh’s passing game against the Saints ran through the running backs. Dowdle’s aforementioned 45-yard performance and Warren’s 36 receiving yards accounted for nearly half of quarterback Aaron Rodgers’ completions and total yards.
As for the true wide receivers, DK Metcalf and Germie Bernard were a fine duo for the Steelers in this win. Metcalf was tied with Rowdle for six targets against the Saints, nabbing two catches for 52 yards. Meanwhile, Bernard caught three passes on five catches for 27 yards.
But, this game was a sign for me that their wide receiver depth isn’t all that great. Injuries to Roman Wilson and Michael Pittman Jr. have hurt the room for sure, but having Brandon Smith play that big a role in the offense (with all due respect to him) probably isn’t what the Steelers had in mind in Week 7.
Stock Up: The Defense
I know I gave Queen a shoutout individually earlier in this piece, but as an entire unit, I thought the defense played great.
The pass defense could have been a little bit better. Saints quarterback Tyler Shough was an effective 30-of-38 for 278 yards and a touchdown, a pretty good day all things considered. But, what matters most is points, and Shough’s offense couldn’t produce many.
And the more the run defense put a stop to Alvin Kamara and the backs behind him, the more the Saints were forced to throw, where eventually, opportunities were there for players like Payton Wilson to pick him off.
