It certainly wasn’t the way that the Steelers drew it up…like, at all, but the Steelers picked up a Week 1 win in Atlanta against the Falcons.
Led by Justin Fields, who was confirmed to be taking over for an injured Russell Wilson just a few hours before kickoff, the Steelers strung together just enough offense and relied heavily on their star-studded defense for an 18-10 win.
Here’s my five thoughts from yesterday’s win:
1: Give Chris Boswell Every Flower Known To Man
Chris Boswell was legendary today, and was no doubt the biggest reason that the Steelers pulled out the win in Atlanta. He was their entire offense against the Falcons, knocking in all 18 points and making some history along the way.
Per Michael Bertsch, the communications manager for the Steelers, Boswell set three new franchise records:
- Going 6-for-6 on total field goals
- 3 field goals made from 50+ yards
- 5 field goals made from 40+ yards
Having a kicker like him was the make or break difference between winning and losing in a game like this, where most of the snaps happened in between the 30-yard lines.
Not to mention, he came in and delivered a solid punt when punter Cameron Johnston got run into but Pittsburgh ended up with the penalty and being forced to re-kick.
His boot traveled 43 yards and delivered the ball out of Pittsburgh’s red zone and into mid-field. That distance, by the way, was only 0.8 yards shy of what the Steelers got, on average, from Pressley Harvin last year.
Honestly, you can close up the competition for special teams player of the week. Boswell has that locked up.
2: Beanie Bishop, despite his flaws today, made a game saving play
This game was about as classic as a Steelers game can probably be; defense first, field goals galore, and the dying seconds of the game still having fans hold their breath.
While perhaps the situation wasn’t as dire as it has been in many games in recent memory, Pittsburgh’s affair in Atlanta featured a similar storyline. With Boswell kicking the chip shot to go up 18-10, the Steelers were giving Atlanta one last gasp with around 30 seconds left and no timeouts, having to drive 70 yards down the field and nail a two point conversion just to tie the game.
Was it almost impossible? Yes. But almost is the key word there. The Falcons have weapons, and if they could get a few passes to the sidelines to start that drive, it wasn’t entirely out of the question.
Enter Beanie Bishop.
Bishop was the man who was able to wrap around RayRay McCloud and tackle him in bounds to keep the clock running. That play alone essentially killed any fleeting chance that Atlanta had.
3: Justin Fields did enough to win, but didn’t dominate
Justin Fields was a game manager in yesterday’s win against Atlanta. The backup turned starter went an efficient 17/23 for 156 yards, and rushed 14 times for 57 yards. He looked progressively more comfortable as the game went along, but he never truly looked dominant in this contest.
The few plays that the Steelers, and in particular offensive coordinator Arthur Smith, took the training wheels off and really let Fields sling it, it worked. The two long balls to George Pickens (the one that was negated by a very iffy OPI call and the one at the end of the first half) really showed what Fields can do when he gets time, space, and a deep threat like Pickens to throw the ball to.
Perhaps if Pittsburgh had dialed up some more plays like that for Fields, the conversation today is a little different. However, it seemed as though the Steelers were playing it very conservatively, something that Fields needed to adjust more to than the rest of the offense, which has been operating that way for years.
All that to say: I wouldn’t be surprised to see Russell Wilson start in Week 2.
4: Russell Wilson had a reason to be dressed, unfortunately
Speaking of Russell Wilson, let’s discuss his wardrobe today. Despite being on the injury report and ruled out with a calf injury, Wilson paced around on the sidelines with his full uniform, including padding and eye black on.
What’s most ironic is that Roman Wilson, who was also out with injury, is right behind him in this photo dressed in street clothes.
Unfortunately, the joke was not to be. Wilson actually was listed as the emergency quarterback for Pittsburgh today, behind Fields and backup Kyle Allen.
Wilson being dressed as the emergency quarterback is decidedly less fun, but I suppose it brings some clarity as to why he was dressed in uniform.
5: TJ Watt continues to do TJ Watt things
It’s games like these (so, pretty much every game), that reminds us how lucky the Steelers are to have TJ Watt on their side. The star recorded a sack, a pair of tackles for loss, and a fumble recovery against the Falcons today – and those are just the stats that counted.
Watt made numerous other game-wrecking plays, including a strip sack of Atlanta’s Kirk Cousins that was negated by a very questionable offside call.
It’s actually a shame how much of his work was washed away by penalties, and that a simple check of the box score at the end won’t tell. He was truly electric for the Steelers.
When I said it was a very Steelers-type win, that’s another reason as to why. Watt carries this team whether they want to come with or not.
